BUDAPEST, Hungary, Feb. 5 /Christian Newswire/ — Biblical Family Advocates is amazed that Switzerland’s highest court would even consider such a case which opens the door for the mentally ill to kill themselves with the help of doctors.
In an article dated Feb 2nd, 2007 titled ” Swiss may expand assisted suicide law,” one is left questioning the mental stability of the court itself when they advocate suicide for the mentally ill.
“I was actually stunned by the development because it not only takes advantage of the mentally ill, but it could very well lead to forced euthanasia of mentally ill patients.” So says Phil Magnan, Executive Director of Biblical Family Advocates, an organization dedicated to Biblical morality. “We have already seen the forced euthanasia of thousands who did not want to die in the Netherlands. This ruling by the high court in Switzerland opens a huge door for abuse.”
According to the article, the high court’s ruling stated that “It must be recognized that an incurable, permanent, serious mental disorder can cause similar suffering as a physical (disorder), making life appear unbearable to the patient in the long term.”
Magnan continued, “Is it not mental illness to seek to kill your self? Why would a doctor not seek to alleviate suffering using more compassionate methods of “doing no harm” to a patient? Doctors will continue to lose their identities as care givers and healers if they are allowed to kill their patients.”
Biblical Family Advocates pleads with the medical community to reconsider its goals to alleviate pain by advocating the death of those who suffer. They should instead use proper pain management as well as treating the mentally ill with loving family relationships. This situation also calls for churches to take a more pro active role in ministering to those with serious mental conditions with prayer, spiritual transformation and understanding.
